There is a caf (Inn on the Park) and toilets at the far end of the lake from the car park. Ashridge Estate - (NT) - "Ashridge Estate is a 2,000 hectare (5,000 acres) area of the Chiltern Hills with beech and oak woodlands, commons and chalk downlands" "Accessible parking - twelve accessible parking spaces, 50yds from the visitor centre. Map of accessible route. There is a short easy access trail leading directly from the car park. This lovely National Trust Estate consists of 2,000 hectares of woodlands, chalk hills and open meadow areas. It still enjoys the Graffidge Wood and the stroll through the Knebworth House grounds, but this option also has the walk up through Knebworth woods that we feature in the second route. The walk basically is a long walk through mainly big open sweeping arable farmland, so it's a great walk for some healthy exercise and fresh air. It is run by the Woodland Trust and at over 850 acres it is the largest uninterrupted woodland area in England making it one of the best Hertfordshire forest walks. A stunning coastal stretch, Stackpole in Pembrokeshire offers beaches, wooded valleys and trails to explore as the whole family can enjoy discovering this rich and historic National Trust location in South West Wales. There are direct trains from London Moorgate via Finsbury Park and Hertford, plus a bus service to and from Hertford and Stevenage. You'll also emerge out onto a clearing overlooking the dramatic entrance to the tunnel itself deep in the woods at one point, making the adventure even more fun. Oughtonhead is a beautiful nature reserve with the River Oughton running through it and is managed by the Herts Wildlife Trust. Frithsden Breeches1.25 milesThe Frithsden Beeches is a large area of woodland which is an important area of conservation in Hertfordshire and contains large and interesting Beech tree woodlands that are often used in films. This route is quite simple in itself with some nice countryside views as you stroll around the outside of the village, and there's a nice pub near the start point of the walk for a post-walk reward. Be prepared for a workout as this long route takes you to the summits of Warden Hill, Galley Hill, Telegraph Hill and over the top of Lilley Hoo as you go. Refreshments: The Boot, Dane End. Ashridge. In essence it's an extension of the third walk that heads north out of the village through peaceful Hertfordshire countryside and along the John Bunyan Trail until it meets the Icknield Way Trail. Theres an alternative route back to Hertford which Ive yet to try, away from the river. We access Sherrrardspark woods from the car park near the B197 which runs parallel to the A1. We might not have any big hills to climb, but there are fabulous river walks in Hertfordshire, historic parklands and some stunning bluebell woods. Mardley Heath is great fun for cyclists little kids will enjoy exploring the many paths while big kids will LOVE the open sandy space where some industrious souls have created some bike jumps my children love racing over these.
